Now I'm a noble vintage wine,
but to be fair, the decades have been fairly kind and
I have still the charm to wear
my elegant ensemble of cotton and a smirk.
But every day's another song,
and every song's another day alive.
I've flatted fives and I have counted all my quarters twice…
And cursed the skin-deep days behind.
While I sing foolish wishes to the wind.
Sweating blithely while I
laid my eyes on lines of type
falling from myself like they
hadn't done in quite some time
and the vaguest notion of some changes
I couldn't yet identify.
Furiously scribing
in a daze of rooibos cups
while I split hairs between extremes of
far too strong and simply not enough -
intoxicated on a cocktail
of prairie fire wine.
Said: "Believe me, babe, I ain't some broken tragedy.
Everything you hear is what I have to show for doing me."
And watched the leaves outside my window.
While I sing foolish wishes to the wind.
You think you've heard them all,
well, there are plenty more in store.
Perhaps I'll be so fortunate to live a thousand more.
Six o'clock the supermarket crowd
is full of lonely sinners
buying shrink-wrapped single servings of
their hearty family dinners,
pulling down tobacco caps
to mask their weathered gazes of despair.
Staring at the floor,
they queue behind me,
sneaking glimpses of the tabloid rags
and impulse buys that line the aisle -
anything to keep their minds off of
the drudgery that saturates their lives.
And taking my tomato paste and rice,
I walk smiling towards the day's remaining natural light…
To spin another number
And play it to the ether
And watch it disappear again.
While I sing foolish wishes to the wind.

Trouble Blues

We all got our share of trouble
And I'm inclined to say it's right,
'Cause without the trouble
We'd all live our lives in black and white.
Yeah, I'm lost without the trouble.
Bring back the trouble to me.
I got a wealth of issues
And a lengthy list of fears (oh really).
But we ain't goin' nowhere
'less there's wrenches thrown in all our gears.
Hey, I'm lost without the trouble.
Somebody bring the trouble to me.
Don't bother me with details,
'Cause they've lost all of their meaning
And I've thought 'em all out anyway,
And they're nothing I can't take, believe me.
Sippin' on my Sazerac.
Dreamin' dreams and feelin' spun.
You want to see 'em happen?
Tell me that they can't be done.
I got a couple guitars
And an ugly vintage bass.
But when the trouble's gone,
They just never sing the same old way.
So come back and make your troubles
Any time that you want to,
Just stick around the next time that you do.
Please stay with me the next time when you're through.
